It's hard to believe that the beautiful Maple-Leaf flag aroused such controversy when it was first proposed to replace the Red Ensign as our national flag over thirty years ago. Seen as a break with Canada's history as a colony of Britain by some, there were campaigns to keep the  Union Jack as part of Canada's flag. Unlike the Red Ensign, the proposed Maple Leaf flag was simplistic, original, and lacking any colonial symbols, in the words of Mr. Stanley (the man who first sketched what was to become Canada's flag) it "emphasizes the distinctive Canadian symbol; and suggests the idea of loyalty to a single country." No wonder it was so hated by the Monarchists.
